It all started in February 2017, when I decided on a whim I would give this cookie thing a try. My twin daughters were 7 months old and were starting to become a little more independent in entertaining themselves, giving me a little extra time to take on an extra project. I had only made these types of cookies a few times before for personal gifts but figured I had nothing to lose if I made up a sample set, snapped pictures and posted them on my social media profile. I took the plunge and did it and the response was greater than I expected! I took in about 12 orders and decided from then on making a business out of this could be possible. It did not take long in my small community for the word to get out about my cookies! I set up as a cottage food business so I could continue to work from home and care for my girls. Every new order is an exciting adventure and challenge. I consider it such a privilege to play a part in celebrating life and all its special moments through my cookies!
My cookie making process is a several-day-long affair. First there’s the mixing of the dough, rolling out, and cutting each shape then they are baked to perfection. Once the cookies are baked, the icing is mixed and colored. For each color, several consistencies might have to be made depending on the type of design I’m making. Thin runny icing is for “flooding” or covering the cookie then stiffer icing is made for piping. The more colors, the longer it takes me to mix all my icing up just right. Then it’s time for decorating. After filling all the piping bags and squeeze bottles with icing, I’ll begin with my first layer. Sometimes this can be done all at once or it will need to be done in sections waiting on each part to dry first. The first layer needs at least 6-8 hours to dry. Most of the time, I wait until the next day for additional layers to ensure my cookies are just right. The finishing touches are added and if additional layers are required, more time for drying is too. I love adding a special touch of detail with airbrushing, sprinkles, edible paints and more when I have the opportunity. At last when the masterpieces are complete, my cookies are either arranged on a platter, individually bagged and sealed, put into decorative packaging if desired, or arranged in a bouquet.
